Gilbert Public Schools Election 2014

McClellan: Pair of #GPSBoard candidates could maintain ‘rigid ideology’ at #GilbertSchools

Mike McLellan, East Valley Tribune Columnist, commented on two of the Gilbert Public School Board candidates who want to maintain a “rigid ideology” as McLellan states it in his latest article.

One of these candidates, Ron Bellus is endorsed by Darryl Colvin and both did not support the override for 2014.

Afterwards, I introduced myself to Mr. Bellus, who was as expected a very cordial gentleman. However, it took several iterations of the same question — “do you support an override?” — to finally get an answer from him: Not at this time. He went on to say that “first, A, B, and C” have to be done, not explaining just what those letters meant.

So you have to wonder how he wants to “protect the classroom” when he is willing to see even more funding leave the classroom as the current override expires.

The other candidate aligned with Ron Bellus is Dawn Brimhall who is endorsed by retiring Board President Staci Burk.

Mr. McLellan had many questions for Mrs. Brimhall which included why she opposed the override in 2013 and others such as:

“I have a question, Mrs. Brimhall: Do you believe the board officer setting the agenda should be able to remove a potential employee or an employee up for renewal from that agenda without a vote of the entire board? Why or why not? Thank you!”

“I have another question, Mrs. Brimhall: Do you agree with Mrs. Burk’s proposal to provide 75 percent of state funding to students in the GPS attendance boundaries who wish to attend private schools or be home schooled in exchange for the district keeping the remaining 25 percent? Why or why. Not?”

He has yet to hear back from Mrs. Brimhall to these questions and more. Her campaign got a late start and hopefully she has plans to provide information to the electorate so voters can make an informed decision based on her positions on various issues.
